Working on our budget-but-fabulous crown ...

Rugby Artists and Makers are one of the community groups within the town that have been asked to make a crown. This is for a special town centre crown-spotting trail running from 28 April to 15 May. The window selected for display of this very special crown is that of The Alex (ideal!). There are all sorts of takes amongst our artists and makers on how this should be constructed and - although the focus is on the collaborative crown for the window - we will have paintings and drawings and some solo designs on display that you can see when we are open.

Pretty sure that the crown worn in May's ceremony will not feature a lampshade frame sprayed gold, wrapped in ribbon and embellished with glass bead waste. Assuming that the cushion it rests on will probably be bland velvet and not Saori woven from hand-dyed and hand-spun handwoven cloth. That there won't be a jewel with a skull made from waste metal and coloured perspex. There may be no needlefelting at all ...

I am seeing the crown here taking shape and it promises to be fabulous. Local artists and makers are clear leaders in creative problem solving. In this case its how to make a crown for less than £50. Reckon we are acing it. Apart from anything else this crown will be topped by a crocheted and beaded fantasy in place of the conventional jewelled ball and cross. Designed and made by Vikki Skinner (@just_like_ivy) who will be at the Alex on 14-15th April, working on this side project as well as selling her many splendored fibre jewellry peices. Come and visit her and look out for the just-as-colourful work by Lorraine (@eves_ruin) on Saturday 15th.

The elements of the RA&M crown-in-progress are on show at the Alex, with more being added and revised each week.  Sharing a picture of Vikki's work in progress. Just as a taste ...
