Steve and Gemma admire work by Eric Gaskell (Rugby School Triptych) |
During November we had a really special exhibition. As a gallery that shows work by local artists who live/work or have some other connection to Rugby, it was great to have a theme of 'The Rugby Town'. So our own town was the subject matter of all the art on show. Large and small, with original works ranging from £20 to £2200 and very affordable prints. (As we have also started to stock a range of cards, including some that also feature Rugby, the work of local artist Jim Watson - you can buy small scale Rugby town artwork from £3 even after November!)
Thank you to artists:
Dazzler.18, Eric Gaskell, Jess Hartshorn, Jim Watson, John Thompson, Sam
Basnett, Steve Davies and Trev Partridge (Rugby's painting postman). Thank you also to the junior artists who had work on show.
Youth artists at the Alex
In September we issued a call to local youth artists to take part in this show and had the opportunity of having two work experience students here in late October (Maya Moorthy and Eleanor Newey, Rugby High School, pictured) so were able to work with school age artists directly. After judging by Eric Gaskell, Steve Davies and Evelynn Wenman all six submissions by young local artists (from Ashlawn School, Bilton School, Lawrence Sheriff School and - of course - Rugby High School) were judged to be of good enough quality to display.
Representatives from Rugby First (sponsors of prizes) admire some junior prize-winning work (L-R Kimberly and Linda) |
Rugby First donated Rugby Town Centre vouchers as prizes for the Youth section, and there was a prize from Rugby and District Arts Society, and also Art at the Alex. Visitors to the Alex joined in and voted on their favourite three to determine the prizewinner for the visitors vote category.
Martyna Sienkiewicz (Lawrence Sheriff), won first prize (£50 of vouchers) for her painting of the statue in Caldicott Park, 'Vibrant Life of Rugby'.
Maya Moorthy (Rugby High), won second prize (£30 of vouchers) for her fanciful 'Oh lovely Cemex!'
Oleksandra Hordiichuk (Ashlawn) for 'St Andrews Church Rugby' (a view of the church from Regent Street) took 3rd prize (£20 of vouchers), won the Rugby and District Art Society Prize and also (by a narrow margin) won the visitors vote prize also.
