In our cabinet of curiosities

Of the dozens of handmade items by local artists and makers, this intricate, intriguing pyramid of flowers caught the eye of our current work experience student Amy.  She took these photos and wanted to show the design in use with lights inside as well as without. As she points out: 'This flower lattice is a porcelain ornament (about 30cm tall) which could make a great gift. It can be used as a centrepiece for a garden party, or as a light covering indoors. Or just an ornament or gift for someone'. The ceramic piece is hand decorated and painted* and could make a lovely decoration for any style of home.

Made by Braunston based Tamsen Flack (Ceramicsnsilk) this will be on display as part of Tamsen's cabinet shelf here at Artatthealex until end of May. Unless someone pops in and buys it!

(* UPDATE: Tamsen has pointed out that techically its not painted. 'I mixed stains into the porcelain clay to get coloured clay and then manipulated the clay to get the patterns. If anyone looks inside the lattice they will see the flowers, leaves and stems peeping through - not painted but made!' So very special).

Other items that particularly caught Amy's attention were:
The hand-crafted 'silver spoon' rings made by Dashing Hound Artisan Jewellery which use Victorian cutlery, and could be great gifts for history lovers. The rings are made from vintage silver spoons. They all different, unique markings, including hallmarks, making each ring special. Dashing Hound will only be on display on 24th-25th May as we changeover of our exhibitiors after this. So if you want to see these visit this weekend.

The views of Hillmorton locks which are part of Eric Gaskell's show in the Cafe Gallery this month also caught her eye. His linocuts include many colourful scenes, from UK and beyond, but she really loved the simple choice of colours in these two works. Hillmorton Locks is a favourite subject for his work and can be found in his book 'Canal Linocuts' (Eric Gaskell & Paul Higson), now in its 5th edition and also for sale at the Alex. Amy feels that as the piece features local landmarks, it would be a great gift for fans of local walks and local scenery. (Find out more about Eric's show here).
