Very excited to be part of the Heritage Open Days 2022 programme of free events. This year the theme is Astounding Inventions. At Art at the Alex the crafts and tools on display and in use over these weekends are particularly relevant to this theme. We have been showing weaving looms and knitting machines from decades (or even centuries) past which we still use.
On 17th September (Worldwide Spin in Public Day) we will have a Great Wheel in use here. There are displays of lace making and silversmithing, and also printing using lino and woodcut. Its definitely a joy to see artists take motifs from the Alex's garden and see new artists each weekend settle into working here.
At a time of national mourning it feels particularly appropriate to
revisit past achievements. The artwork that can be made with simple
manual tools, through application of patience, hard work and ingenuity
is definitely impressive and often inspiring. The programme changes
each day but we offer an interesting experience whenever you visit. (You can download the Autumn Flyer showing other dates we are open.)
